Human remains discovered in Zapopan, Jalisco

The Jalisco Attorney General reported that 18 black bags with human remains were discovered in Zapopan, Jalisco after the municipal police conducted a surveillance patrol around the area. Authorities first located a human limb, which led them to the bags near the Periférico Poniente overpass and Bosques de La Primavera Avenue.

The remains have been transferred to the Jalisco Institute of Forensic Sciences where they will be analyzed to determine the number of bodies, the cause of death, and possibly their identities.

On Wednesday, five people were killed and one injured after a shooting was reported in Tlaquepaque. An investigation is ongoing.

On Tuesday, a shooting erupted at Los Otates restaurant in Zapopan. The Zapopan municipal police reported that several heavily armed men aboard at least two vehicles entered the restaurant to kidnap a diner, who was also accompanied by other armed individuals. The exchange of fire was recorded for several minutes. Three people are injured, including two waiters and a police officer. Their status is not yet known. One of the alleged gunmen died at the scene. His body was collected and transported aboard a pick-up by the other gunmen.

In November, at least 113 bodies were recovered in clandestine graves in El Salto, Jalisco. Thirty of the bodies have been identified by relatives, including two women and 28 men; the rest of the bodies remain in the Forensic Medical Service as “unidentified deceased persons.” Excavation into the grave began in October when forensic experts discovered four bodies on a farm in Los Sabinos subdivision.

Jalisco tops the list with the highest number of exhumed bodies from clandestine graves, with 897 bodies between 2006 and September 2020. It is also the state with the highest number of missing persons, with 3,568 cases reported since December 2018.

From 2006 to September 2020, at least 4,092 clandestine graves have been discovered in Mexico, in which 6,900 bodies have been exhumed.
